I make music and perform with the monikers Headaches and St.Gilles. In 2009 I released my first full-length album on cassette and can soundly say that everything about it's production from start to finish was done by yours truly. I chose to release it on tape with a digital download for several reasons, but two were the most persuasive.
One was that my car only has a tape player, so over the past few years I've grown quite fond of my mixtapes and albums on cassette. The other was that I wanted to work with multiple surfaces for designing the artwork. I'd done a CD before and was looking to do something different. I wanted the release to have some character and wanted it to be a complete package with the visual being a huge element of the release as well.
Before the idea for the cover was conceived I saved my hair clippings for nine months. I wasn't sure what exactly I was going to do with them, but I knew one day the idea would come. The photo is real and no digital manipulation took place. After setting the lights, I applied the hair my face using Elmer's glue and hoped for the best.
The artwork for the white cassettes and j-card is a mixed media design that includes a self-portrait, lined school paper, pencil, felt marker and hand written type.
